Unicorn Halloween Costumes for the Whole Family

Every Halloween since M was a year old, we’ve let her choose a costume and an overall family theme for Halloween. This year she waffled back and forth between spooky creatures and superheroes — and then she saw a unicorn horn and changed her mind completely! So, we are all being unicorns. I decided to buy various pieces to make our costumes (with M’s help) rather than getting pre-made outfits, because I think we can reuse some of the items for every day wear, or for dress up clothes for the kids.

Some of these are the actual items we have; some are very similar!

Matt’s costume is probably the most hilarious and/or horrifying. M picked out a black morph suit and a terrifying full sized unicorn head for him. I just need to find him shoes of some sort.

For herself, M selected a red tutu to go with her unicorn headband. She also picked out pink wings because I guess she’s a flying unicorn? I bought rainbow leggings and a rainbow jacket for her because Halloween is usually cold here and I want her to be cozy.

My costume is similar. M insisted I buy a rainbow tutu. I found myself my own pair of rainbow leggings and a flowery unicorn horn, and I’m sure I have a sweater or hoodie I can wear to keep warm.

And then there’s A’s costume! It will be his first Halloween and my biggest concern is keeping him warm and comfortable. I think I will either be wearing him in a carrier or pushing him in a stroller so I also wanted something fairly simple. And, there are no ready-made baby boy unicorn costumes I could easily find. So, I bought this knitted unicorn hat (there’s an adorable and inexpensive girly unicorn hat here!) and he’ll be wearing it with a warm white bunting we already own. Easy.

This is a fun theme and I love that M is still into picking out costumes for everyone. Hopefully we can keep it up and figure out how to make it a shared selection when A gets older!

All Treats & No Tricks: Halloween Fashion

Halloween Fashion on Etsy

I’m sharing a few Halloween finds from Etsy this week, in preparation for the upcoming holiday.

Halloween Fashion on Etsy

I am a sucker for all kinds of spooky things, and Halloween fashion on Etsy is where it’s at. Of course, I don’t dress as a pumpkin every day or anything like that, but I see nothing wrong with throwing on skull print leggings or a black cat necklace even when it isn’t Halloween! M is much the same; her spider print pants are on heavy rotation in her closet all year ’round and she loves dressing up as various animals even for kindergarten days.

With that being said, all of these items can be considered Halloween fashion, but there’s nothing stopping you from enjoying them in October and beyond! Clearly we love black cats in this house, and as for the rest of it, who doesn’t love a bit of dark humour and style?

Here are a few of my favourite finds for Halloween fashion on Etsy. I actually had a hard time narrowing it down to a handful of things; there are so many great shirts, dresses, and accessories! I tried to stay away from the obvious costume-y fashion in favour of items that could work into regular wear.

There is something here for everyone, from the littlest kiddos with a cat print bib to the witchy ladies and gentlemen in your life. I especially love the Mom-ster shirt and think it would definitely be appropriate for me outside of Halloween. Like, realistically, it’s probably applicable every single morning of my life except for those rare times when I actually get enough sleep at night.

All Treats & No Tricks: Halloween Party Supplies on Etsy

I’m sharing a few Halloween finds from Etsy this week, in preparation for the upcoming holiday.

Today: Halloween party supplies on Etsy!

Halloween, for us, is all about the kid-friendly activities. We are not at a spooky, creepy Halloween stage. I’m okay with that! I am the person who seriously regrets watching horror movies every time I dare to watch one, and I am apt to kick and flail if someone, or something, jumps out at me in the dark. Give me the Reese’s cups and fluffy unicorn costumes and I’m happy.

Our Halloween plans this year are simple, though they seem to get more involved every year. We have a few community events and parties to go to, a special Halloween show in Winnipeg, school for M on Halloween itself, and of course, trick or treating.

I think it would be fun to host our own party one year! Of course, Halloween hits right in the middle of a busy time — school, prepping for winter, the kids’ birthdays less than a month away — so it may never happen, but it’s fun to imagine what I’d choose for a kid-friendly Halloween party. All of these items are available on Etsy. They’d work great for a Halloween party, or a spooky birthday party, baby shower, engagement party — you name it.
